1978-80 Leavers ReuniteOn 11th May, the College welcomed back leavers of 1978-80 for their 40 Year Reunion. A number of OEs enjoyed a pupil-led tour of the campus before all guests convened in Main Hall for a delicious curry supper.
The OEs, some of whom had not been back since they left 40 years ago, were delighted to see several former members of Common Room at the event: Russell Tillson, Norman Rice, David Young, Carol Creevey and Lorna Vickers, as well as current staff: Second Master Paul Williams and Mike Hobbs.
A slide show of school images from the late 1970s ran throughout the evening and the College Archivist, Rebecca Jallot, provided many more photos and memorabilia for guests to peruse.
Education Trust Director, Helen Tranter, welcomed the group and later spoke about The Mermaid and the part OEs can play in supporting the campaign. Paul Williams gave a presentation on the College 'then and now' and spoke of the school's growing number of accolades. These include a glowing ISI Inspection, which in February awarded Epsom the highest grade of ‘excellent' in all areas, and being placed in the top 2% of schools by the Department for Education.
Following the dinner, one guest commented, "I had a very enjoyable and memorable evening. Over dinner we recalled a number of stories from our time at the College and it seemed like only yesterday since we left. It just goes to show that we should not underestimate how formative and special those years really are, although it often takes an event like this to bring it home."
