Site plans and Floorplans of The Mermaid
Our current Sixth Form Centre is a single room formerly known as the Tuck Shop and the College Store. Epsom College today is an institution offering young people of aspiration and ability an incredibly rich, diverse and exciting education. The new building represents an exceptional opportunity to update, extend and enrich our infrastructure and facilities.
The current Sixth Form Centre
This transformative space will be located at the heart of the College, built across three floors and designed in a Victorian contemporary style to complement the other buildings in the Quad. It will be spread over almost 2,000 sq m and will take approximately 15 months to build. The initial demolition work will take place during school holidays so there is minimum disruption to pupils.
Proposed site for The Mermaid
The ground floor will contain an open-plan Café/Gallery area. This floor will also be home to the Careers Office, a space which pupils will use to access key guidance on university and career choices. On the left side of the building will be the Assistant Head: Pupil Welfare Office, which will be accessible to all pupils. One of the building’s three Discussion Pods will be situated on the ground floor and will accommodate 12-15 students, thus facilitating group project work. In addition, the ground floor will contain the Assistant Head: Sixth Form Office, the Heads of Year Office and a Screening Room, which will be used as an important teaching aid. Leading out from the open-plan Café area will be an outdoor stepped terrace.
The first floor will contain four Interview Practice Rooms, which can also be used as Music Practice Rooms. As music is an important part of College life, with regular school performances and soirées, a dedicated space in which to practise will be of great benefit to pupils. This floor provides the first of the five additional Classrooms within the building. A much needed large Study Room will be based on this floor, which both pupils and teachers will be able to use for silent study. In addition, the first floor will be home to two Seminar Rooms, a Staff Office and further office space.
The second floor will have a large Lecture Theatre with the capacity to seat 189 pupils. It will be a versatile space that can be used for both debates and lectures. This floor will contain an Observation Room, which will be a helpful aid for observing prospective teachers during class, and will provide development opportunities for existing teachers. Additionally, the third floor allows for four additional Classrooms and further office space.
